Do you know the story of how your dad met your mom? Do you know how your grandmother got her name?
Did you ever ask?
Don’t you wish you knew those stories?
Your kids and grandkids will want to know your stories too.
You might not think your story is all that interesting. But it is, to the people who love you.
Your stories link you to your dear ones. They root each generation of your family within a timeless history that is yours alone. They bind you to the people who came before you and to those who will come after.
Every story is a gift—a thread in the tapestry of your family history.
Your stories will be remembered.
Your stories will be passed on.
Your story is your legacy. So don’t wait to tell it.
Some day, some time, some person—perhaps someone you may not live to meet—will want to hear it.
Your story will be their treasure.
Your story is a treasure to the people who love you
How do I know this is true?
Because my greatest treasure is a recording of my Ukrainian grandmother—my baba—reminiscing about her life. (I’m turning it into a book to share with all her descendants.)
My baba’s story makes me giggle and cry every time I hear it.
And every time I replay my baba’s voice, I’m wrapped once again in the warmth of her love.
The great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who never knew my baba love her story too. They no longer speak her mother tongue, but they honour her memory, and her stories are still part of the fabric of their lives.
My second-greatest treasure is recordings of my mom and dad. These are short recordings—made rather by accident in the course of a different project.
I always meant to go back and record my parents’ full life stories. But I put it off for too many tomorrows.
Don’t make the same mistake.
Don’t wait for tomorrow.
